What is RSS? It's a way of pulling information from our computer to your computer. Using the RSS feed - you can have a program or browser on your computer ask our computer what's new in our inventory - and display it to you automatically.
How do I use it? Depending on the web-browser you're using - you may be able to just CLICK on the RSS icon, and agree to subscribe to the feed.
Browsers that work that way are: Internet Explorer 7, Netscape 9.0x and Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.6. Safari 3.03 for windows works fine.
Avant Browser 11.5 - has an option under Bookmarks - add: http://www.bidservice.com/browses/RSS_FEED.asp to the entries and it will read this feed fine. Maxathon 2.0.3RC works a bit differently - if you go to open our feed - it will ask if you want to add it to your "Subscriptions" - if you indicate Yes - it will then be accessable within the Maxathon browser.
Browsers that have problems with some RSS feeds are Internet Explorer 6, Netscape 7.0x, and 8.0x and Opera 9.xx
If you want to subscribe to the feed using your browser - we'd suggest using the very latest version available - RSS is an evolving standard and compatibility is best with the newest browser versions..
How does Bid-Service suggest using it? What we've found very useful is a dedicated RSS feed reading tool - which is a form of "aggregator". This program runs on your computer - and "pulls" information from RSS feeds. It asks our system "what's new" and then displays that for you.
One that we really like is "Feedreader 3.0" - it's free, very easy to setup, doesn't hog your system, and works great with all the versions of Windows we could find. It can be set to run as a service on your PC, and to poll our site periodically. If new inventory is found, a small window will popup on the bottom corner of your screen showing you what's new.
| Feedreader can be downloaded from their website -
http://feedreader.com. Once it's downloaded and installed, right click on this link: and select "Copy Shortcut". | |
| Open Feedreader - and select "File/New->Feed" (or F3) - and the link to our RSS feed should appear in the box. | |
| Click on "OK" to save it. You can then close Feedreader - it will remain active on your toolbar in the background, and when it finds new equipment has been added to our website - a window will popup showing you what it found. |
How else could you use the feed: Yahoo, Google, AOL and other
tools offer web-based aggregators that will work with "FeedBurner" - an
aggregating service owned now by Google.:

Using a web-based tool has the advantage that you can use it on any computer you
happen to be at by logging into the service.
